Bird of the Week

White-tailed Ptarmigan
Lagopus leucura
Ptarmigan acquire pure white feathers for camouflage during winter, including large white feathers on their feet - snowshoes! The snowshoes, which they have from September through April, increase the surface area of their feet, thus making it easier to walk on snow.
Birding Site of the Week
Potholes State Park
Columbia Plateau
Potholes State Park is an island of trees surrounded by water and scrub habitat. Breeding passerines include Bullock's Orioles and Black-billed Magpies. Check the Western Grebes on the water, and you may spot a Clark's. Check the shoreline for wading birds, including Great Egrets and Black-crowned Night-Herons and a variety of shorebirds.
